Part of the secret to finding the most flattering wedding dress is figuring out which neckline works best with your body shape – but which one is it? Halterneck or scoop? Sweetheart of boatneck?

And while you may have a whole Pinterest board filled with wedding gown inspiration, it’s important to realise that your dream wedding dress may not actually suit your body shape.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event and you will be the centre of attention for the day, so take the time to talk to the experts, who can advise you on what best suits your body shape,” suggests Emily Tan, founder of bridal online store, Miss Merry Marry.

Emily and her husband Ken decided to launch their business Miss Merry Marry this year after their own wedding, when Emily had trouble finding the right dress to suit her budget.

“My wedding dress was a beautiful off-the-shoulder satin gown and decorated with crystal beads,” recalls Emily.

Apart from offering dresses on the site, brides are also able to design their own gowns with the help of theMiss Merry Marry team.

The online store doesn’t own a showroom with a large inventory for customers to visit, although brides-to-be are welcome to visit their consultant’s room, located in Milton in, Brisbane, where they can chat to the team and discuss what they want in their dream dress.

Here, Emily offers some of the most popular necklines for brides and which are the most flattering for women of all shapes and sizes.

Sweetheart

“Romantic and classic, this is by far the most popular neckline with brides,” says Emily. “It works best for medium to well-endowed women. Just make sure you’re showing the right amount of cleavage: not too much, not too little.

Strapless

Another common option, this neckline is perfect for showing off lovely collarbones and beautiful necklaces. If you’re conscious of your arms but still appreciate the line of a strapless gown, an option is to perhaps choose a bolero or a glamorous stole to cover up.

Boatneck

A boatneck gives extra coverage and is an elegant choice for traditional weddings, says Emily. It can be paired with short or long sleeves. However, it’s best avoided if you’re well-endowed, as it will make you look heavier on top. It is also not recommended if you’ve got a short neck or a double chin as it will draw attention to that particular area of your body.

Halterneck

This is a great choice if you’d like to accentuate your curves. And, it’s perfect for tall or broad shouldered brides, says Emily. If you’re conscious of your arms, this is probably a neckline to steer away from, as it may make you look wider than you actually are.

Off-the-shoulder

This sexy neckline is ideal for brides wanting to flash some skin on their wedding day and is flattering on most figures. Although it’s best avoided for women with broad shoulders and fuller arms.

One shoulder

“This is a contemporary choice and works well with pear shape or larger busts. It also accentuates your collarbone, so it’s best avoided if you have broad shoulders or heavy arms,” says Emily.

Scoop

Generally, you can’t go wrong with a scoop neckline. It shows off your collarbone and can elongate a neck. It can also create a lovely hourglass shape as it creates a balanced look between the upper and lower bodies, too.

V neck

From subtly sexy to low-plunging and racy, V necklines are a great option for most women. As it can create a longer, leaner silhouette. This option highlights your face and elongates your body, as it draws the eye downward. If you’d like a fairly low neckline. But you’re self-conscious, you may consider a deep V-neckline with sheer lace at the front, advises Emily.

More and more brides of today are opening themselves up to the idea of wearing someone else’s wedding dress down the aisle. If you aren’t entirely sold on the idea. Then here is a brief run down of why you should consider a second hand wedding dress.

First – what is a second hand wedding dress?

We here at Easy Weddings like to refer to second hand wedding dresses as pre-loved. After all, at one time they have been lovingly worn down the aisle on what is to be many brides’ most important day of their lives.

A pre-loved wedding dress is one that has been worn before. These garments are often already altered and modified to suit the first owner’s sizing and fashion tastes. So it can pose as either an opportunity or an issue when it comes to purchasing a pre-loved wedding dress.

This brings us to our first point of why you should consider jumping on the band wagon. And purchasing a pre-loved wedding dress.

Endless options and opportunities

Opening your mind to the pre-loved way of life can also present endless options and opportunities. Also you may not have considered prior. Purchasing a wedding dress is often a stressful and all-important decision in the wedding planning process. Adding to the mountain of wedding planning decisions you must ultimately make. Bridal boutiques throw in the choice between tulle, lace, satin, silk, corsets, strapless, sweet-heart necklines, and more. While it’s great that bridal boutiques are able to offer so many choices to suit brides of all fashion styles and tastes. But some brides simply want to choose something and be done with it.

Pre-loved wedding dresses give brides the opportunity to view a dress, decide if they like it, and purchase it. And, with the help of a great alterations company, someone else’s wedding dress can be transformed into your dream wedding dress.

Cheaper expense

According to the Easy Weddings’ 2016 Annual Australia Wedding Survey, the average price of a wedding dress is $2,475. For some Australian brides, forking out that kind of money simply isn’t an option. While others may just prefer to spend more on parts of their wedding that ultimately carries more importance in their eyes.

The great thing about purchasing a pre-loved wedding dress is that you may be able to snag a gorgeous garment for the fraction of its original cost. This gives you more wedding budget to splurge in other areas. Perhaps a honeymoon to the Maldives? – or more money in your pocket to kick off married life together.

Take it off another bride’s hands

Thousands of couples marry each year in Australia – and this means thousands of stunning wedding dresses hang sadly in their garment bags in their owner’s wardrobe. Purchasing a second hand wedding dress not only releases dresses from the constraints of their garment bag. But takes it of the bride’s hands and gives her some money in her pocket as a bonus. You win because you snagged a gorgeous wedding dress at a fraction of its original cost. Plus, the original owner wins because she frees up some space in her wardrobe and receives a nice bit of spending money for an upcoming holiday. Second honeymoon, anyone?

Vintage possibilities

More and more brides today are open to the possibility of wearing a vintage dress down the aisle. With the option of purchasing a pre-loved dress, finding a one-off or a vintage garment becomes an achievable and affordable fete.

Designer brands open to you

While some brides simply don’t have the means to fork out thousands of dollars for a designer wedding gown, this doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t want to rock a Gahlia Lahav Haute Couture gown on what’s meant to be the most important day of their lives. With the ability to buy pre-loved wedding dresses, designer branded wedding gowns can be purchased at a fraction of their original cost. This is a win-win situation because you can wear the designer brand you deserve, and the original owner can recoup some of the money she spent on the gown.

Gives the dress another trip down the aisle

Wedding dresses are created to make brides feel like A-list celebrities on their special day. These gowns are worn on what’s meant to be one of the happiest days of your life. So it makes sense to breathe life back into the garment and give it another trip down the aisle. Plus, what is another bride’s dream wedding dress could also be yours!

What to remember

Remember, when considering a pre-loved wedding gown. We recommend negotiating with the original owner to include dry cleaning in the purchase price. Most brides take careful care with the wedding dresses. But dry cleaning the dress before purchase can ensure any makeup marks or wedding cake smudges are taken care of. And, with the often high price of dry cleaning a wedding dress, your bargain pre-loved gown could end up costing you just as much as new.

Additionally, you will have to be prepared to alter the pre-loved garment to fit. Wedding dresses are often made to fit a particular bride. So purchasing a pre-loved wedding dress can pose the issue of finding one that you not only adore, but that fits your body shape.

You’ve got the ring, now it’s time to find the dress! Wedding dress shopping can be very exciting, and is no doubt a moment that you will want to cherish and make the most of. Just remember, it’s never too early to shop for a dress, especially if it’s for an event that happens once in a lifetime!

If you’re not sure where to start, or maybe you’re a little nervous, here are some essential reminders to help you when shopping for your wedding dress…

Personality is pretty

Choosing a wedding dress is a very individual experience and is an opportunity for brides to express their fashion personality, after all, your wedding day is the biggest fashion moment of your life! Choose a gown that reflects your style and taste rather than opting for something you or someone else thinks you should wear.

Let the professionals help

Your first choice may not always be your best choice. You may have to let go of that image in your mind wearing that specific dress. Allow the experts to help you pick the perfect cuts for your body. Who knows? You might fall in love with a second or third pick!

Shop smart

If you’ end up getting engaged around the same time as sale season, then make the most of it! Start shopping while the sales are on, you never know you may find what you want for a great price!

Bring water and snacks

On the day of your fitting, bring snacks. You’ll probably be spending a few hours at the boutique and it will no doubt be a long day. Avoid the hangry (hunger + angry) feeling so you can make the right decision.

Take your wedding location into consideration

Take cues from the setting. You may have chosen a beach venue or a garden wedding. Consider styles that will fit the atmosphere; you don’t want to walk in a thick, ball gown while under the hot, sweltering seaside sun!

Take photos

If the boutique allows you to, it can be helpful to take photos. This way you can see how a dress photographs and see how it fits your figure from all angles. The best part about taking a photo is that it helps you to compare different gowns and allows you the luxury of giving yourself time to decide if you really love it or not!

Browse online

Go adventurous and hit the internet. Ah, the glorious power of online stores! Some bridal boutiques offer amazing deals—just make sure you read the return policy well.

Consider second hand

Maybe you’re a lover of all things vintage? Maybe you’re interested in selecting a pre-loved wedding gown? Or maybe you’re thinking about altering your mother’s wedding dress, explore all opportunities to find what’s right for you!

Try everything

Try on as many dresses as you have time for! While some may say this can be overwhelming, the bottom line is that you won’t know if you like something until you try it on! However, try to only try on gowns that are within your budget to avoid disappointment.

Don’t be afraid to speak up

If you aren’t comfortable with a dress, or you feel something isn’t right, don’t be afraid to speak up! Just because the shop assistant, or your mother or bridesmaids are comfortable with it, doesn’t mean you should be if you aren’t happy! This applies even more so to brides who are having their gown custom made; make sure you clearly communicate how you’re feeling so you are 100 percent happy with the final product.

Buy a dress that fits

Buy a size that fits your present figure. Maybe you’re planning to lose weight before your wedding day, however, it’s easier to fit into a slightly-bigger dress than a too-small dress. Also, you may run the risk of buying something that you plan to fit into, but come the big day it doesn’t quite fit.

Consider your accessories

Don’t forget the accessories. The belt, veil, shoes, jewellery and headpiece makes a huge difference with the entire look! Try some of these on as well.

Follow your heart

Listen to opinions, but trust your gut. Many brides say they know when they have found the dress, and liken it to the feeling of knowing when they have found ‘the one’. Listen to your heart and choose the dress that give you butterflies, (or makes your mum cry!).

Enjoy the moment! (wedding dress)

A happy bride is a beautiful bride. Enjoy the experience, and if you’re happy with your purchase, it’ll definitely show. Keep that joy and let that radiance brighten up your aura on your wedding day!

Unless you are in the business of events planning, your wedding may well be the first time you’ve had to book live music. With the number of options available and people to keep happy, you might feel completely unprepared for the task. To take some of the head scratching out of the process, wedding band booking agency Function Central have given us their top tips. The tips on what to consider when booking professional live music for your wedding.

Work Out Your Tastes – but Think Style Over Specific Songs

A lot of couples make the mistake of thinking they need to work out exactly which songs they want to hear. But a good wedding band will do all this for you. The first thing you really want to establish is your taste in music and the sort of atmosphere you want to create. There are lots of songs that are guaranteed to get everyone dancing. But before you think about those – and we suggest you leave that to the band anyway. Work out what sort of genre or style you want. Do you want a loud, modern and energetic wedding band, or something a bit more traditional?

If you have an artist or group you like, there are lots of tribute acts to go for. But beware of alienating your audience. It’s your day though, so if your favorite tribute will make you happier than a full dance floor, go for it! It might be that you have a specific era of music – maybe Motown, or the 70s, or Britpop 90s bands. Indie-rock might be your thing, or modern artists like Katy Perry and Rihanna. Or perhaps something very sophisticated and traditional, like a swing band. There are lots of possibilities, but before you start looking be clear on your tastes and the vibe you want.

Think About Your Audience

On your wedding day you will be bringing three or four generations of two families together, and many of them will be meeting for the first time. You might be into heavy metal but unless your guests have similar musical tastes, an Iron Maiden tribute might not cut it for your grandparents. So if you want to fill the dance floor, think about your audience and the sort of music that will appeal to most tastes to get people dancing. If you want a wedding band that can just read the room and go with the right vibe, choose experienced performers, who are comfortable with a broad repertoire of modern chart numbers as well as big hits from past decades.

Go for Performers, Not Just Great Musicians

You’ll need a band who are not just musically competent but with performers who can engage the crowd and get everyone dancing. A really great wedding band will know that your special day is all about you, and they’ll be able to put on a show while keeping you at the heart of your wedding day. Look for promotional material that gives you a sense of their energy and how they interact with the crowd.

What Size Band Can You Accommodate?

Stage space is really important when deciding on a band. If you’ve only got a small stage, you might need to go for a three- or four-piece, or maybe even a soloist or acoustic duo for very intimate weddings. Find out from your venue how big the stage area will be and you can discuss options with the potential bands or your live music agent. Talk to your venue to find out what their performance space is like and whether or not your band can easily load to and unload from the stage. If the venue has a sound limiter, even if you have the stage space you might need to look at smaller band options to save the power cutting out mid-song.

Get Googling

An obvious way to find a wedding band is to research online. Make sure you check out promotional material, repertoire and testimonials to get a good sense of potential acts. Lots of bands also promote themselves on Facebook and Instagram so look beyond their main promotional video and see if you can get a real sense of their personalities and performances from their posts. One thing to consider when searching online is that a standard search will return bands that have the most web expertise or can afford paid ads, not necessarily the ones that deliver a great show. So you could potentially be missing out on lots of acts. This is where an agency can help you reach the best bands that aren’t necessarily all over the web.

Speak to an wedding Agency

If you don’t want to spend hours researching, enlist the help of an agent. This is probably the easiest option, as good agencies will only have professional bands on their books, and they’ll be able to narrow options to suit your budget, tastes and requirements, without you having to trawl through pages of promo material. Be as upfront as you can about what you’re after and give as much detail as possible and they’ll take a lot of the leg-work out for you. Booking with an agency such as Function Central also gives you guarantees – not just that you’ll have a professional band with the quality gear and the right insurance, but you’ll have assistance on the day in case there are any surprises.

Once booked, you can look forward to a night of music, laughter and terrible dance moves with your loved ones.

However, according to Lili Rich from Bella Victoria Bridal in Robina, Queensland, it’s worth spending the time to unearth a gown that fits well and flatters your shape.

“A bride wants to make sure she emphasises her best features on her day and is comfortable in the gown she will be wearing for many hours. For me, the best part about helping brides choose their dress is providing them with a gown that lights up their face and makes them feel beautiful and magical,” says Lili, who launched Bella Victoria Bridal last year.

Even though the store is just a few months old, Lili is already helping up to 20 brides a week in their search for the perfect wedding dress.

Here, Lili offers up her best advice on how you can find a beautiful dress that suits your figure.

Be open to other styles

It’s time for a reality check. Not everyone suits big princess ballgowns or slinky dresses with fishtail skirts.

“The biggest mistake brides make is not being flexible around their vision of what they think they should look like on their day. It is important to keep an open mind to other potential styles and fits,” gently advises Lili.

Rather than trying to fit your body into the dress that you’ve always dreamt of. Find one that actually suits your shape and flatters your figure.

A dress to suit everyone

If you’re not sure what to wear and where to start, Lili suggests going for an A-line dress. It is universally flattering on almost all body shapes. It’s fitted at the hips and gradually widens to the hem. Another option to try is a strapless gown with a romantic sweetheart neckline, she adds.

Cover up in style

If your wedding is being held during the chillier months or you’d just like to cover up, there are many sophisticated dresses that have a half or full sleeve that you can choose from, says Lili. Alternatively, you may want to consider wearing a matching bolero-style jacket.

Control your ladies

Busty brides might feel the urge to hide their chest by wearing higher necklines. But this will only make you look even more bosom-y, warns Lili.

“With a busty bride, it is all about the neckline. V-necks, sweetheart and scooped necklines will complement a bride with a larger bust,” she suggests. “Halter necklines can look great on some who have a prominent bust and off-the-shoulder necklines can be an asset for those who have narrow shoulders.”

The perfect gown for petites

If you’re a smaller bride, a strapless mermaid or trumpet gown would work really well on you.

“You can also go for a style with a waistline above the natural waist, since it will make you appear longer. Avoid dropped waist or big ballgowns,” suggests Lili.

Create a slimming effect

To create the illusion of a slimmer body, diagonal pleats are a great choice for more voluptuous ladies. As well as ballgowns, but stay away from sheath gowns and stretch lace.

Add some vavavoom

To make the most of your curves or to create some, a mermaid dress. Or a fit-and-flare gown would help to define a beautiful hourglass shape.

“If you have a smaller bust, a sweetheart neckline or a deep V-neckline will add volume to your bust. Try to avoid a straight neckline,” offers Lili.

Be gone, belly

“Empire or A-line dresses work best to make the waist and tummy area look smaller. Try to avoid stretchy lace gowns,” says Lili.

From regal gowns that transform into sultry minis, to detachable skirts that provide two unique silhouettes for a bride to wear in one day. It’s obvious that there is great appeal in having a transformable wedding dress, after all, why commit to just one look when you can rock two or even three?

Many designers have dabbled in the world of detachable and transformable bridal fashion, and we have selected 10 of our favourites to help inspire your bridal look.

Berta Bridal

An elegant fusion of bold lace and cascading tulle is what makes this transformable Berta Bridal wedding dressso special. A bride wearing this gown can have the best of both worlds, and she won’t have to choose between the big tulle skirt or the sexy, lace mermaid style gown.

Hayley Paige

Look oh-so-sweet not once, but twice, on your wedding day with this Hayley Paige number. It’s an ivory lace mini dress with a flattering V-shaped illusion neckline. Over the sheath dress is a layered tulle that is, of course, finished off with Hayley Paige’s signature lace appliqué.

Monique Lhullier

We’ll be honest with you Ms Lhullier, you had us at feather over-skirt. While we aren’t sure what the current price of this whimsical gown is, we do know that it’s completely free to stare at this re-embroidered Chantilly lace creation. This divine dress also features a clever racer-style illusion neckline.

Oscar de la Renta

This Oscar de la Renta gown will have you beginning your wedding day encased in a point d’esprit ruffle skirt only to transform later in the evening into a more understated look. The fluffy tulle skirt is detachable, enabling the bride to don a more fitted and less elaborate gown.

Zuhair Murad

This cap-sleeved Zuhair Murad gown features embroidered embellishments and a detachable skirt which emulates the same detail on the dress, creating a cohesive addition of extra volume. Remove the skirt and the bride can opt for a more fitted and sexy bridal look.

Jim Hjelm by Hayley Paige

This unique look combines traditionally casual outerwear with bridal evening wear. A bride can wear the jacket to add an edgy element to an otherwise conventional gown, only to later remove the jacket and transform into a traditional bride.

House of Mooshki

Talk about a transformation! This gown provides the wearer with two very unique looks. The sleek silhouette of this clean and classic House of Mooshki dress is turned into a dreamy, almost magical piece with the addition of a detachable tulle skirt.

Asos

Not everyone can pull off a jumpsuit on their wedding day. However, for those who can and love exploring new fashion trends, this transformable jumpsuit with a cape is a fun bridal option. The detachable cape provides the perfect balance of structure and femininity.

Yasmine Yeya

This Yasmine Yeya gown transforms from a floor length gown into a sheer, lace mini-dress. Bringing together lace, tulle and silk satin, a bride can enjoy the two different silhouettes, but also three unique fabrics.

Enzoani

Last but not least, is this elegant transformable ensemble by Enzoani . During the ceremony, a bride can wear this delicate and detachable sheer jacket that’s embellished with beautiful beads. Later in the evening she may simply remove it for a more daring, figure hugging evening look. Two words: sheer perfection.

All too often we hear horror stories from brides who purchased wedding gowns or bridesmaid dresses online. Only to have a garment arrive that looks nothing like the photo that was advertised. While ordering from online retailers or large department stores might seem convenient and cost-saving, brides-to-be and bridesmaids often end up having to splurge on extensive alterations, find replacements, or go back and forth in an attempt to get a refund — and that’s if the gowns arrives in time.

Real Bride and Expert Insight

One recent email from a Bridal Guide reader details the bride’s stressful online experience, saying the dresses that arrived were of “horrific” quality, and had stitching marks all over the bodice. When she followed the process to get a refund, the company refused. “I have now sent back and forth over 25 emails and they have told me they will not issue a refund,” she says. If you’re interested in hearing more stories like this from real brides, head to Bridal Guide’s Facebook community, where the in-store vs. online shopping debate is always a hot topic.

Traditional bridal salons aren’t just for your mom or grandmother. In fact, they’re arguably the best way to purchase your bridal party’s dresses. Erica Cohen, co-president of Bari Jay Bridesmaids explains it best, “traditional brick and mortar stores sell an experience; they provide swatches, work with you on customizations, and offer a larger selection of styles, colors, and fabrics than department stores. They care about making your wedding beautiful and special.”

And Steve Lang, CEO of Mon Cheri Bridals and President of the American Bridal and Prom Industry Association (ABPIA) shares, “today’s bride should be extremely cautious when ordering wedding attire from a website she is unfamiliar with, as there are numerous counterfeit sites that display designers’ images as their own but do not deliver products of the same caliber. The best thing to do to ensure that the gown is authentic is to visit a local authorized retailer where she can see the dress sample in person and try it on before she places her order.”

Having mixed feelings about which way to go? Here, we rounded up our favorite reasons to stay traditional in your shopping experience!

Personalized Service

When you walk into a bridal salon, you’re guaranteed to feel special. Bridal consultants are there to ensure your shopping experience is flawless. Not sure what style you’re interested in? Have five ladies with complete opposite body types? Just find out your maid of honor is pregnant? No problem! Your consultant is trained to guide you in finding the perfect selection. If you ever have an issue with a dress or need immediate alterations. Most salons have a seamstress on hand who can help in a time crunch and is familiar with the materials. And, they can guarantee all dresses are ordered from the same dye lot. So you never have to worry that colors will look off in wedding day photos.

Large Selection

Shopping online can often seem like a black hole. You’re 10 pages in and you still haven’t found anything that appeals to your wedding vision. And, if you do find a winner, you head to checkout and see there’s only four dresses left and they’re not even available in your color of choice. Ugh! Leave the stressful logistics to the professionals at a bridal salon. They’ll work directly with the manufacturer to ensure everything from the color dye to the fabric is the same for the entire bridal party batch. And, you won’t be limited to just a few designers available. Salons offer the largest selection of styles and designers so you’re never missing out on something!

Individualized Sizing

Bridal and bridesmaid sizing are very different from streetwear sizes. To find the perfect fit for each person, you’ll want a professional at a reputable store measuring everyone. Since consultants work with these designers on a daily basis. They’ll know if you need to go up or down a size so your alterations are kept at a minimum.

Special Pricing

Many traditional bridal salons run sales throughout the year. So all you have to do is call to see when the next one will be. And, one of the biggest benefits of in-store shopping is that you get personalized service. Ask about a group discount as many salons will offer one when the entire party purchases bridesmaid dresses at the same time. This can save everyone money!

Convenient Perks

In-person salons offer brides a seamless bridal experience. Such as purchase your wedding gown, bridesmaid dresses, veils, shoes, undergarments, and more in just one place. Avoid those long, frustrating phone calls with a customer service representative who can’t fix your issue by having a storefront you can walk into. Inside Tip: Some of the best local salons are known to permit you to pop the bubbly and are happy to help plan a shopping soiree for you and your girls. And, if your bridal party doesn’t live near you, don’t fret. Places like Bella Bridesmaids and David’s Bridal, have locations all over the country so all your bridesmaids have to do is find their nearest location.

Wedding gown shopping — oh, where to begin! For starters, as a bride, you should aim to look like the absolute best version of yourself on your wedding day. And aside from your beaming smile and bridal glow, your dress will be front and center.
